How to Set Realistic Fitness Goals (and Actually Stick to Them) This Summer

Learn how to set realistic fitness goals this summer with practical strategies that help you stay motivated, build lasting habits, and achieve sustainable results.

The summer months bring with them endless outings, social engagements, and fun in the sun. As a result, many people often feel a renewed motivation to get healthier or more active in the lead-up to summer. Most people set very ambitious goals, only to burn out and quit a couple of weeks later. There's nothing wrong with ambition. But to achieve lasting results, ambition alone is not enough. You need a plan that pairs ambition with sustainability.

Start with Your "Why"

Identifying your personal motivation is almost as important as developing the fitness routine itself. While focusing on your appearance can be a good catalyst for desiring a change, for most people it isn't enough to sustain a long-term lifestyle change. Instead, studies have consistently shown that those who focus on improving their health, energy, stress relief, and overall confidence are better able to sustain a long-term commitment than those who are motivated by aesthetics alone. Meaningful goals are the key to long-term change, in the summer and beyond.

Set SMART Fitness Goals

Fitness goals are much like any other. Simple, vague goals are hard to stick to and often aren't met. "Get fit" is a great goal, in theory. But it lacks any substance. Those who consistently meet their goals follow the SMART framework—that is, goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. So instead of making the summer goal to simply "get fit," one could instead set a more realistic goal of walking for 30 minutes, five days a week, for the next eight weeks. Breaking goals down into smaller milestones and achievable chunks not only prevents burnout, but also sets the foundation for lasting momentum.

Build Habits Instead of Chasing Perfection

When someone is at the beginning of their journey, it's tempting to go as hard and as fast as possible, as if intensity is the same thing as achieving results. But by trying to speed-run the process, people, more often than not, burn out and fall off the proverbial wagon entirely. That's why consistency is the key. The person who lifts weights for 30 minutes twice a week will see more results over time than the person who tries to lift for an hour every day with maximum reps, only to quit for months on end after two weeks. Preparing workouts ahead of time, setting a schedule, and allowing for flexibility when life gets hectic are the keys to success.

Track Progress Beyond the Scale

It's vital to remember, especially during the summer when there is so much pressure to lose weight, that success isn't measured solely by the scale. Increased strength, improved energy, better sleep, and a better fit for your clothing are all better indicators that can keep you motivated even when the scale seems to stall or plateau. A simple fitness journal or tracking app can do more to keep you on track than the scale ever will.
